Tough as Nails?

I am curious about how children pick the sports they want to play in the future. For me it was easy due to the fact my older brother played sports and my father as well. As a three sport high school athlete and a one sport college athlete, this is what I live for. But for some who don’t share the same views in sports as me, what has changed the athletes’ views in the sports they play.
What comes to mind when I think of the sports men and women play, is the Cult of True Womanhood and the Male Gender Role Identity. Basically these state that the woman should be in the house, cleaning doing the domestic chores, while the men are providing a roof over their head and food on the table. This also followed in sports as well. My mother told me that when she was growing up, it was foolish for her to play on the soccer team because it was a “Man’s sport”. Now, some of the best athletes are women soccer players. As for men, we’re all tough and aggressive right? What about Merce Cunningham, a famous modern dancer. I’m sure growing up he was picked on and was told he couldn’t dance.
