here's a fast one

A stereotype that I didn't even notice and was right under my nose the whole time is in the video game Mario Kart. My friends and I play almost every day and no one has said a word about it. The characters in this game are all characters from Super Mario, but there is only 1 girl in the game. This character is princess peach who wears a long pink dress, white gloves, and giggles when she passes someone. All the other characters say a cool catch phrase like "I'm the best!" or roars. this could show that the female character isn't as aggressive as the male characters. Female characters are portrayed as either not a main character or as sexual and revealing.

Jeroen Jansz and Raynel Martis' article The Lara Phenomenon: Powerful Female Characters
in Video Games talks about the gender and race in video games. Their study had the results that the female characters often show up in leading roles as well as guys do."...Men hold dominant
positions, women are submissive." (Jansz &Martis 2007) While thinking of many video games, I can now see the stereotype. this was once invisible but now is quite noticeable.

A main point they bring up in this article is the game Tomb Raider. Although the main character doesn't abide by them, she does still have one. Yes, she is a girl, she does have gun and is masculine, but she does still wear revealing clothing. This game does not have a secondary character though. This means that all the features of Tomb Raider seem to be enhanced or larger making her even more revealing.

Media fairness

This is pretty straight forward. How can a company put woman down like that and think that that's ok? I'm a guy and I feel bad. There isn't any woman dominated commercial and if there was even an idea were to come about, the Executive would never let that fo to public, even if it was a woman.

Many may not remember this, but Bob the Builder is a construction worker who has many friends. Wendy, a close friend, help him along his ways with the construction needed. This is a great example of how not everyone follows the idea of gender stereotypes.

Tough as Nails?

I am curious about how children pick the sports they want to play in the future. For me it was easy due to the fact my older brother played sports and my father as well. As a three sport high school athlete and a one sport college athlete, this is what I live for. But for some who don’t share the same views in sports as me, what has changed the athletes’ views in the sports they play.
What comes to mind when I think of the sports men and women play, is the Cult of True Womanhood and the Male Gender Role Identity. Basically these state that the woman should be in the house, cleaning doing the domestic chores, while the men are providing a roof over their head and food on the table. This also followed in sports as well. My mother told me that when she was growing up, it was foolish for her to play on the soccer team because it was a “Man’s sport”. Now, some of the best athletes are women soccer players. As for men, we’re all tough and aggressive right? What about Merce Cunningham, a famous modern dancer. I’m sure growing up he was picked on and was told he couldn’t dance.
